L. Academic Profile
During my career as a researcher, I have been interested in several areas, all of which pertain to the well-being of clinical and non-clinical populations. In the recent years, however, I have focused on the prosperity and subjective well-being of older adults, and concentrated on two main topics, in which I try to combine my extensive experience as a clinical psychologist, my interest in music therapy, and above all, my curiosity regarding the social and psychological aspects of aging. So far, I have published 85 papers in peer-reviewed journals and seven book chapters. Thirty-eight papers and one chapter were published since my appointment as an associate professor at Bar-Ilan University. Seven more manuscripts are currently under review. Following is a brief description of my academic work.
One area of research concerns connections and relationships between ageist perceptions, anxieties regarding aging and death, and both younger and older adults' self-perceptions. For example, previous studies have not examined the effect of older adults' self-perceptions on rehabilitation from age-related incapacities. Accordingly, I submitted a grant proposal which aimed to examine the effect of positive and negative self-perceptions of aging, age and death (e.g., subjective age, meaning in life, positive and negative affect, nearness-to-death, aging and death anxieties), on the rehabilitation of older patients following stroke and osteoporotic fractures. This idea aimed at extrapolating my previous findings that age-related limitations may block compassion and yield negative attitudes toward older adults (Bergman & Bodner, 2015). The grant proposal (nearly $100,000) was accepted, and is financed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space.
This line of inquiry is also demonstrated in other works I initiated or was involved with, demonstrating the importance of perceptions of aging to the individual's wellbeing in old age. For example, I have examined the connection between age perceptions and a myriad of mental health aspects, such as psychological wellbeing (Shrira, Bodner, & Palgi, 2014), affect complexity (Bodner, Shrira, Bergman, & Cohen-Fridel, 2015), and positivity ratio and flourishing, (Shrira, Bodner, & Palgi, 2016). I have also examined broader social aspects, such as family status and education (Ayalon, Doron, Bodner, & Inbar, 2014), or the positive effect of leisure activities on cognitive functioning in old age (Lifshitz-Vahav, Shrira, & Bodner, in press).
An additional aspect of my research concerning aging and older adults relates to anxieties regarding the final stages of life. Here, I delineated the differences between aging and death anxieties (Bodner, Shrira, Bergman, Cohen-Fridel, & Grossman, 2015), demonstrated the mediating role of death anxiety in the relationship between attachment styles and ageism (Bodner & Cohen-Fridel, 2014), and showed the differential contribution of aging and death anxieties to ageism and to mental distress, as well as the moderating role of affect complexity in these relations, and its relevance to nearness-to-death (Bodner, Shrira, Bergman, & Cohen-Fridel, 2015; Shrira, Bodner, & Palgi, 2014). Additionally, I focused on two subjective measures of age and death. First, I explored a novel variable, subjective nearness to death, and found that the perception of nearness-to-death has a moderating role in the relationship between loneliness and mental distress (Bodner & Bergman, 2016). Moreover, I took part in research endeavors which found that this subjective perception predicts mental distress, even after controlling chronological and subjective (felt) age (Shrira, Bodner, & Palgi, 2014). Second, I participated in studies examining the effects of subjective age as a moderator in the relationship between exposure to trauma (e.g., various sorts of traumatic events) and physical impairment in old age (Shrira, Palgi, Bodner, & Shmotkin, in press). The latter study, as well as other studies (Shrira, Hoffman, & Bodner, 2014) hint at mechanisms which may exacerbate and mitigate the effect of traumatic events.
As I am also a faculty member in the Department of Music, a substantial part of my research focuses on the psychological aspects of music along the lifespan. In this regard, I have published, together with my graduate student, a study which demonstrated that the preference for music judged to contain positive emotions increases in old age (Shiffris, Bodner, & Palgi, 2015). In addition, focusing on positive emotions in therapy as part of training is an unstudied area, and consequently I have showed with another student of mine, a clear tendency among music therapists (as well as other health practitioners) to focus on the negative emotions of their patients, rather than on positive emotions (Bodner, & Assa Polansky, in press). As for the regulation of negative emotions, I have shown that even though "problem music" (i.e., musical genres considered provocative and unpleasant, such as hard rock and heavy metal) is associated with populations suffering from social difficulties, it has a positive potential in regulating negative emotions among younger adults (Bodner & Bensimon, 2015). Moreover, I found that problem music decreases affect complexity among individuals who are not partial to this kind of music (Bodner & Bensimon, in press).
It may also be worthwhile to mention that currently, two publications stemmed from a research grant ($34,000) I received three years ago. In these studies I have attempted to examine how health care providers react toward a group of suicidal and difficult to treat patients, i.e., borderline personality disorder patients (BPD). Nurses in particular, but also psychiatrists, demonstrated more negative attitudes toward these patients. This finding yielded pragmatic implications for the training of nurses who work with BPD patients (Bodner et al., 2015). In another study, which combined my interest in death anxiety with the study of attitudes of health care providers toward BPD patients, I found that psychiatrists' fear of death predicts negative affective attitudes toward borderline personality disorder patients (Bodner, Shrira, Hermesh, Ben-Ezra, & Iancu, 2015).
I intend to continue the collaborative work already established with leading gerontologists around the world, within the scope of each of my research endeavors. My continuous research effort will also include intensive education of graduate students, the co-authoring of papers for high-impact journals, the submission of additional grant proposals for international funds, and organization of study days and conferences.
