The Bar- Ilan Music Department was founded in 1970 to meet the demand of a wide diverse student public interested in musicology and ethnomusicology. Since that time, many new degree programs have been added: music teacher's certificate, master's degree in music therapy, advanced degrees in composition, and a certificate or degree program in music technology. The department is the largest of its kind in Israel and the only one that offers a doctorate in music composition.

For many years, the department graduates in all the department programs have been engaged in academic and artistic frameworks in Israel and abroad. The Bar- Ilan Music Department is known to be exceptional in the academic Israeli scene. It deals with academic research activities of all kinds, encourages interdisciplinary activity and cooperative intra-disciplinary projects. The music department reflects the uniqueness of the Bar-Ilan University, and is deeply involved in academic activity in Israel and abroad.
