CV
Avi Bar-Eitan
I joined the Department of Music at Bar-Ilan University in 2022. For the past 25 years I have lectured at the top institutions of higher education in the country, including the Hebrew University, the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, Levinsky College of Education, Musrara Naggar Multidisciplinary School of Art and Society, and Ono Academic College. I teach a variety of courses such as Israeli Popular and Folk Music – History, Culture and Genre, Introduction to Jewish Music, Methods in the Research and Analysis of Popular Music, Klezmer Music – Origin and Modes, Theory, Harmony, Ear Training, Counterpoint in the Style of Palestrina, Counterpoint in the Style of Bach, Keyboard Harmony, Orchestration, Acoustics, Instrumentation, Musical Arrangement, and Computer Applications in Music. I have published a six-part book series for the study of music theory and musicianship.
My activities as a musician also include the development of music software and equipment with the leading companies in audio modeling, sound processing, virtual reality, and simulation of multidimensional spaces. My work in music technology is part of my research on the development and application of various technological tools in both performance and higher education. I am writing a study on the use of hybrid instruments in composition and performance. Electronic hybrid instruments employ both traditional musical techniques and physical modeling algorithms that allow the instruments both to sound faithful to the acoustic source and to create new sound worlds. In my research, I discuss the innovation in the concept and explore the problems associated with incorporating these instruments into performance. Electro-acoustic sound production is central to experimentation in new music, and music technologies are among the most important components in the creation, distribution, and consumption of popular music, making knowledge and skills in this area extremely relevant to contemporary ethnomusicology.
I am active as composer, arranger and performer. I have written music for over twenty-two plays, composed a musical on a theme from Jewish folklore, and produced and composed music for over thirty albums. I have composed numerous contemporary chamber, choral, multimedia, and film works, and have written arrangements for every size of ensemble (including symphonic) – both scored and computer. I perform regularly (play and conduct) with many ensembles and orchestras in various genres, including Symphoniette Raanana, Sinfonietta Beersheva, Kaprizma Ensemble, Migvan Wind Quintet, Jerusalem Oratorio Choir, and Firqat Alnoor.
Research
Musical analysis and ethnographic research lie at the core of my research activities. My doctoral dissertation examines specific repertoires of early Israeli music, integrating ethnomusicological fieldwork. Within the field of analytical research, I developed a method for analyzing musical structure in popular songs and utilized existing research methods for my study. Simultaneously, I developed a unique notation system to represent the analytical findings. My master's thesis focused on the analysis of modes in Klezmer music. I have published an article in the journal Musical Performance concerning the performance of Klezmer music in Israel.
Today, I am engaged in several research projects, including a study on the use of hybrid instruments in composition and performance. Hybrid instruments combine traditional playing techniques (such as breath, reed pressure, plucking, and percussion) with physical modeling algorithms. These allow for the production of the natural sounds of the instrument families they simulate because they are capable of generating various performance articulations in real time. An example of a hybrid instrument is the Roland Aerophone, which simulates playing the saxophone and other woodwinds. This instrument is unique in its playability, which mimics an acoustic instrument, and in the sound produced in real time through SuperNATURAL synthesis technology, which alters the timbre according to breath intensity and reed pressure.
The research focuses on the dilemmas involved in integrating these instruments into classical performances. Being involved in the development of such instruments with leading music technology companies allows me to offer insights into their use. Currently, I am in the process of writing two articles dealing with the analysis of musical styles and the role of composers from the Israeli mainstream and the National-Religious stream in expressing ideological ideas through their art. Furthermore, I am writing a book on teaching methodologies for music theory and ear training.
For many years, I have collaborated with musicians, pedagogues, and technology experts. The integration of music and technology, carried out with companies in Israel and abroad—such as Waves, Toontrack, Intel, Microsoft, AudioModeling, Artusi, Xanadu, and others—constitutes an important part of my life.
For years, I directed the External Studies Institute of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, teaching music to the general public, from youth to adults. This experience sharpened my understanding of the diverse possibilities and the broad scope of academic instruction, exposed me to the difficulties faced by music learners, and helped me formulate various teaching methods.
For me, musical analysis is a wonderful tool for both research and creation. Delving into compositional approaches and styles that have evolved over centuries opens a window into aesthetic perceptions and philosophies of life. All of these contribute to my inspiration and creative work. With the tools of counterpoint and harmony, and through ear training and keyboard skills, I feel that the entire world is at our fingertips. Music technology has evolved since the dawn of time, and acoustics have always been an integral part of music. New MIDI interfaces allow me to express my music in various ways that have never been heard before.

I believe that everything begins with love and curiosity. From there, the continued research and development of knowledge in this field allow us to better understand history and the human spirit, while promoting creativity, aesthetics, research, and tolerance—essentially creating a better and fuller world. Engaging with music sharpens our ability to listen to the "other." I find that this learning supports and promotes listening and tolerance, which is one of the most significant matters for me.
To me, the humanities represent the secret of life. The natural sciences provide us with the tools to navigate the world around us; they allow us to understand natural phenomena and create technologies that improve our quality of life. However, without the humanities, all of this is without purpose—the humanities are the pulse beating within us. They allow us to peek into the secrets of human existence and challenge our spiritual selves. Moreover, many ideas drawn from the world of the spirit have found their realization in the natural sciences. The dichotomy between the natural sciences and the humanities exists only on the surface; if we look deeper, we see they are interconnected—the former makes life possible, while the latter gives life its meaning.
In the department where I teach—the Music Department at Bar-Ilan University—there are exceptional men and women, both among the faculty and the student body. The camaraderie, enthusiasm, and spirit of learning are unique to this department and influence both the depth of research and creation, as well as the special atmosphere that prevails there. The sounds of music blending into the campus soundscape serve as my inspiration for teaching, creation, and research.
