פרופ' שי כהן הצטרף לסגל המחלקה למוזיקה באוניברסיטת בר־אילן בשנת 2003 והוא מתמחה בהלחנה ובמחקר בתחומי קומפוזיציה אלקטרו־אקוסטית, סינתזה וגרפיקה ממוחשבת. באמצעות תכנות אלגוריתמי, פרופ' כהן מפתח מודלים חישוביים לתחום האמנות הווירטואלית, מתוך שילוב עולם ויזואלי וצלילי לצרכים בימתיים, ליצירה ברשת, לווידאו ארט, למייצבים ומיצגים.

    פרופ' שי כהן השלים תואר ראשון בקומפוזיציה ובג'ז באקדמיה למוסיקה ולמחול בירושלים ותארים שני ושלישי במוזיקה באוניברסיטת בר־אילן. בעבודת הדוקטורט שלו, "הדי הנצח – Echoes of Eternity", הלחין יצירה סימפונית לכינור ולתזמורת. שנה לאחר כתיבתה, ביצעה את היצירה בבכורה התזמורת הסימפונית של סיאול בקוריאה הדרומית. במאמר הנלווה לדוקטורט בחן פרופ' כהן את המפגש בין נגן הג'ז ג'ון קולטריין לרעיונותיו של המוזיקולוג ניקולס סלונימסקי, מפגש ששינה ועיצב את שפת מוזיקת הג'ז בשנות השישים של המאה הקודמת.

    יצירותיו של פרופ' כהן הושמעו בבכורה בפסטיבלים רבים בארץ ובעולם ונוגנו על ידי טובי התזמורות וההרכבים ופרסומיו ראו אור בכתבי־עת בתחומי מוזיקה, פסיכולוגיה וחינוך. בשנת 2021 זכה פרופ' כהן במענק מהקרן הלאומית הישראלית למדע (ISF) לחמש שנים למחקר אינטגרטיבי על סנכרון באמצעות תיפוף בקרב מבוגרים על רצף האוטיזם והשלכותיו על תפקודם החברתי.

    פרופ' כהן משתתף באופן תדיר בכנסים ובפסטיבלים בין־לאומיים של ארגונים מהחשובים בתחום, ובהם: האגודה למוזיקה עכשווית (ISCM), האגודה האסייתית למוזיקה בת־זמננו (ACL), ברית מלחינים וכותבי שירים אירופיים (ECSA) ומוסדות רבים נוספים שהיו במה יוקרתית ומכובדת לביצועי הבכורה של יצירותיו.

    נוסף על ההוראה, פרופ' כהן השתתף בכמה פרויקטים פדגוגיים וכתב כמה תוכניות לימוד: תוכנית לימוד לתואר שני במגמה למוזיקה, טכנולוגיה ומדיה חזותית, המחלקה למוזיקה באוניברסיטת בר־אילן (2017). תכנון ופיתוח קורס בהוראה־למידה חדשנית, "קומפוזציה ואלתור בזמן אמת", מכללת לוינסקי לחינוך (2017). כתיבה ופיתוח של הקורס "מוזיקה ויצירה בסביבה ממוחשבת", 14 יחידות לימוד בנושא קומפוזיציה ותיווי ממוחשב, המחלקה לספרות לשון ואמנויות באוניברסיטה הפתוחה (2010). פיתוח קורס אינטראקטיבי ללימוד תיווי ממוחשב באמצעות תקשוב, התוכנית לטכנולוגיות מוזיקליות, המחלקה למוזיקה באוניברסיטת בר־אילן (2003).

    על יצירתו ועל מחקריו זכה פרופ' כהן בפרסים רבים, הבולטים שבהם: פרס ראש הממשלה לקומפוזיטורים, פרס האקדמיה המלכותית לאמנויות היפות של סן קרלוס בספרד, פרס אברדין למוזיקה עכשווית; פעמיים זכה בפרס מפעל פרסי אקו"ם וזאת לצד פרסים רבים אחרים על הצטיינות בחינוך.

    פרופ' כהן ממלא מגוון תפקידים ציבוריים, בין היתר, הוא כיהן כראש איגוד הקומפוזיטורים בישראל, חבר ועד מנהל התרבות בפרס ראש הממשלה לקומפוזיציה, חבר מנהל התרבות להאזנה והערכת תזמורות והרכבים, ממליץ לוועדת קרן "אינמורי" לפרס קיוטו היוקרתי (Kyoto Prize) לאמנות ולפילוסופיה ושופט בתחרויות קומפוזיציה בארץ ובעולם.

    מחקר

    תחום מחקרו של פרופ' כהן מוגדר כ־STEAM, כלומר: מדע (Science), טכנולוגיה (Technology), הנדסה (Engineering), אמנות (Art) ומתמטיקה (Mathematics) ובא לידי ביטוי ביצירה ובמחקר מוזיקליים ובדגש בתחום האמנות הווירטואלית (ניו־מדיה) ושילובה בעולם ויזואלי־דיגיטלי לצרכים בימתיים ולסביבות למידה אינטראקטיביות.

    כותרות כמה מפרסומיו האקדמיים מספקות רמזים על תחומי התמחותו: "השפעת מדיטציית מיינדפולנס על הכישורים הקוליים של תלמידי חינוך מוזיקלי", פורסם בכתב־העת Psychology of Music (2021); "סנכרון פיזיולוגי והתנהגותי המנבא לכידות וביצועים קבוצתיים בתיפוף", פורסם בכתב־העת Scientific Reports (2019). כתבה ידידותית לקריאה על תוצאותיו של מחקר זה פורסמה באתר מאקו.     בשנים האחרונות משמש פרופ' כהן ראש המסלול למוזיקה, טכנולוגיה ומדיה חזותית באוניברסיטת בר־אילן. המטרה הפדגוגית של מסלול לימודים זה היא לאפשר לסטודנטים ולסטודנטיות שיש להם נטייה מוזיקלית־טכנולוגית להתפתח וליישם את הטכנולוגיות העכשוויות ביצירה או במחקר מוזיקלי. המסלול הוא גשר בין מדעי הרוח להנדסה, ואכן, המסלול מושך אליו מגוון אנושי מיוחד של סטודנטים וסטודנטיות ללימודי תעודה, תארים ראשון, שני ושלישי, המבקשים להביע את עצמם ביצירה ובמחקר בתחום זה. נכון להיום, אין בארץ חלופה ללימודי קומפוזיציה וטכנולוגיה בהיקף שניתן במחלקה למוזיקה באוניברסיטת בר־אילן, שנוסף על המגוון הנרחב מציעה גם קורסי תאוריה וגם קורסי התמחות מעשיים. כמה מנושאי הלימוד בתחום זה הם: אקוסטיקה, קוגניציה, תכנות אלגוריתמי, מוזיקה מאתמול למחר (היסטוריה וספרות), עבודת אולפן, קומפוזיציה ואלתור עם מחשבים נישאים, סינתזה, יצירה ועריכה דיגיטלית, תכנות אודיו־ויזואלי ועיצוב פסקול למדיה חזותית.

    לצד היצירה, המחקר וההוראה, בחר פרופ' כהן לתרום מזמנו במגוון תפקידים ציבוריים. בתפקידו כיושב ראש איגוד הקומפוזיטורים בישראל ארגן עשרות קונצרטים בכל רחבי הארץ ובהם נוגנו יצירות רבות של חברי האיגוד. כמורה וכיוצר, מקדיש פרופ' כהן מאמץ מיוחד בעידוד מלחינים צעירים ומלחינים שעלו ארצה זה לא מכבר, ובתוך כך, גם ביצירת שיתופי פעולה עם נגנים ועם הרכבים בביצוע מוזיקה ישראלית על כל במה חשובה בישראל, ובהן קונסרבטוריונים ואקדמיות למוזיקה, וזאת לצד שיתוף פעולה עם איגודים מקבילים בחו"ל על בסיס חילופי תרבות. נציין אנסמבלים בולטים שעמם פועל פרופ' כהן: הסינפונייטה הישראלית באר שבע, התזמורת הקאמרית הישראלית, אנסמבל המאה ה־21, הפרויקט הקאמרי הישראלי, אנסמבל מיתר, רביעיית כרמל, חמישיית תל אביב, אנסמבל זמרי מורן, אנסמבל סולני תל אביב, אנסמבל טרמולו, רביעיית הסקסופונים של תל אביב, פסטיבל צליל מעודכן, חברי פרויקט תדרים, חג המוזיקה הישראלי, Ensemble Airborne Extended מווינה, Ensemble Moscheles מצ'כיה, The Construction Site Ensemble מסרביה ורבים אחרים.
